Why we built BLUE

Every training project begins with content.

Rarely does a training developer receive a complete, well-organized curriculum.

More often, the source material is scattered across presentations, Word documents, regulations, spreadsheets, emails, existing courses, and conversations.

Sometimes it's outdated.

Sometimes it's incomplete.

Sometimes it exists only in the minds of subject matter experts.

And sometimes… it doesn't exist at all.

You aren't handed a course. You're handed a table full of pieces and expected to solve the training development puzzle.

That's where the real work begins.

Creating effective learning isn't simply about writing pages. While developing large-scale computer-based training projects, we found ourselves solving the same production problems over and over again. Existing tools handled pieces of the process, but none managed the entire workflow the way we needed.

So we built our own.

BLUE MACHINE is a lightweight Training Results System that ships with BLUE. It records who enrolled, who started, who completed, and who passed or failed—kept in a thin records ledger on a web server you own. No subscription, no per-seat fees, and none of the SCORM straitjacket a full LMS forces on you.

It runs on inexpensive shared hosting: a desktop console you manage students and courses from, talking to a small PHP endpoint backed by a single-file SQLite database. Completions are written by your published courses out in the world and pulled down when you want to review them—your data, your server.

Need full enrollment workflows, discussion boards, or HR integration? That's what an LMS is for—and BLUE can still publish SCORM into one. BLUE MACHINE is for when you just need to know who passed, without buying and babysitting a whole platform.
